Last year, we had 14 participating restaurants in the 2014 Crab Cook-Off! TThe 2015 line-up and their dishes will be revealed soon. There is some jockying for certain categories and some logistics to be worked out, but this year is shaping up to have some of the most interesting crab dishes we've ever seen. The 2014 participating restaurants and their dishes were:

  Chef Rene Marquis is a graduate of the Culinary Institute of American (CIA) and a combat veteran of 21 years with the United States Army. Throughout his miilitary career, he served as the team captain of the U.S. Army Culinary Arts Team, which brought home 31 gold medals from the Culinary Olympics during his tenure. He won an episode in the first season of the popular television show "Cutthroat Kitchen" on the Food Network.


  Chef Bruce Mattel is the associate dean of food production at CIA, from where he is also a graduate, and is responsible for the curriculum, instruction, program development, and food quality in the kitchen classrooms. He is the founder of the SkillsUSA postsecondary chapter at CIA, which has produced top awards at state and national competitions.


The judging group will be rounded out by three others. Kevin Scott, a Dorchester County native and current National Accounts Manager with the National Restaurant Associatio will serve for his second stint as a judge at Taste of Cambridge. Rita Calvert is a food writer for What's Up Magazine, but brings an array of expertise and experience as a food stylist, educator and cookbook author. Katie Moose returns as a Taste of Cambridge judge after completing her newest cookbook God's Bounty, which pairs Biblical passages, favorite hymns, and inspirational writing with a recipe for each day of the year.


Every year The Taste of Cambridge is organized by Cambridge Main Street and happens only with the help of 100 volunteers. If you're interested in volunteering to plan the 2015 Taste event, or being part of other Main Street events, send a note to
This area is home to hundreds of watermen who have been crabbing for generations. Taste of Cambridge celebrates their hard work -- and the delicious bounty they harvest. Proceeds from the event go to the nonprofit Cambridge Main Street and downtown revitalization.
