Downtown Cambridge's biggest street festival of the year is the Taste of Cambridge Crab Cook-Off and Festival! The 2013 edition of the event was held on Saturday, July 13, from 5-10pm.
The street festival is free and open to all! The Crab Cook-Off happens inside the festival. Here, local chefs from 10 restaurants prepare crab dishes and competed for top honors in voting by ticket holders and from a panel of celebrity judges. Those who bought a ticket for the Crab-Cook-Off got a taste of each of the 14 dishes, then you cast votes for their favorite. Tickets cost $25 per person. The festival benefits Cambridge Main Street, a nonprofit that works on revitalizing the small historic downtown.
WHEN: Taste of Cambridge was Saturday, July 13, 2013. It'll run 5-10pm (Crab Cook-Off tasting happens 5-7:30pm ONLY). Rain or shine!
WHERE: 400 and 500 blocks of Race Street, 500 block of Poplar Street. Plenty of free parking available. Directions are here.
Buy a ticket to the Crab Cook-Off and you get to sample crabcakes, crab dips, crab soups, and crab specialty items prepared by top local chefs. After you sample the crab dishes, you can cast your vote for winners of the People's Choice Awards. A panel of celebrity judges will also be choosing the best dishes for the Judges Choice Awards. Tickets are required to taste the crab dishes; tasting happens 5-7:30pm ONLY, so get there on time!
HOW TO BUY TICKETS:
Entry to the festival is free. Tickets for the Crab Cook-Off cost $25. Tickets are non-refundable. Information about ticket sales for the July 12, 2014 Taste of Cambridge will be announced here in the spring of 2014. SUGAR CRAB! Before the event, from 2-4pm, top pastry chef Steve Weiss created a crab sculpture out of sugar in the window of Hunt Insurance, 436 Race Street! Chef Weiss has competed on several Food Network shows. He also served as a celebrity judge during the Crab Cook-Off.
MUSIC: Live music at the 2013 Taste of Cambridge included regional favorites Anything Goes and Black Dog Alley on the main stage. Guitarist Jeff Calder headed up the acoustic stage, performing with Evan Button, Emma Myers, and Gregory Leibman. Josh Woodward and James Laverty from the local band Blackwater performed in the Sponsor Hospitality Tent.
CRAB-PICKING! Every year the Taste of Cambridge features a professional crab-picking contest to see how fast pickers from local crab houses can pick a dozen crabs! The 2013 winner was Magedlana Mata, a picker from the J.M. Clayton Company here in downtown Cambridge.
CONTESTS and FUN FOR THE KIDS! The festival featured a Kids' Area with lots of contests--watermelon-eating, Lego-building, Cake Walk, and more, plus lots of games, crafts, and other fun, including the juggler Cascading Carlos.
FOOD AND DRINK! Lots of non-crab food and cold drinks were available. Adult beverages available, too!
SHOPPING & ART: PLUS, downtown shops and galleries were open all day and throughout the event. Three galleries hosted free receptions the night of the event; ; see the descriptions of all the shops and restaurants here.
Downtown Cambridge is on Maryland's Eastern Shore, just a few blocks off of Route 50. More detailed directions here.
Ten local restaurants prepared 14 crab dishes. The 2013 participating restaurants included Bistro Poplar, Blue Point Provision Company at the Hyatt Regency Chesapeake Bay Resort, Cambridge Yacht Club, The High Spot, Jimmie & Sook's Raw Bar and Grill, Leaky Pete's Oyster & Wine Bar, Ocean Odyssey, Portside, Stoked, and Suicide Bridge Restaurant.
Every year at Taste, a panel of judges is served blind tastings of all the dishes entered in the Crab Cook Off. The 2013 lineup of judges was:
• Steve Weiss: Top pastry chef, sugar artist, and competitor on Food Network. Hospitality and Culinary Arts Program Coordinator, Blue Ridge Community and Technical College Academy of Hospitality and Culinary Arts. BONUS: From 2-4pm, before the event, Steve created an amazing CRAB SUGAR SCULPTURE in the window at Hunt Insurance, 436 Race Street!
• Kim Cooper: Contributing Dining Editor at What’s Up Magazine.
• Katie Moose: Author of numerous cookbooks and travel books, including the Chesapeake Bounty cookbooks. She is based in Talbot County.

WHY WE DO THIS:
This area is home to hundreds of watermen who have been crabbing for generations. Taste of Cambridge celebrates their hard work -- and the delicious bounty they harvest. Proceeds from the event go to the nonprofit Cambridge Main Street and downtown revitalization.
