About Main Street
Cambridge was designated a Maryland Main Street community on July 1, 2003. Cambridge Main Street is a comprehensive downtown revitalization process created by the Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development to strengthen the economic potential of select cities around the state.
Our aim is to involve groups and individuals that share the common goal of revitalizing the main downtown commercial districts. In order to be successful, downtown revitalization requires the cooperation and commitment of a broad based coalition of public and private groups: businesses, civic groups, local government, financial institutions, consumers, and others. Consumers stand to benefit the most from a revitalized downtown offering goods and services that meet their needs.?
Those who may not belong to existing community organizations may still be interested in participating in the revitalization effort by helping make the downtown an attractive and lively place.?
Cambridge Main Street includes a Board of Directors and highly focused citizen committees:
ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT COMMITTEE—helping make downtown a destination for arts-related activities and commerce and entertainment.
DESIGN COMMITTEE—getting the downtown into top physical shape and establishing design guidelines.
ECONOMIC RESTRUCTURING COMMITTEE—assisting existing businesses to expand, and recruiting new ones.
ORGANIZATION COMMITTEE—developing a broad base of support, including volunteers, fundraising, and financial management.
PROMOTION COMMITTEE—selling the image and promises of a “new” downtown to all citizens.
MAPLE STREET—supporting residential revitalization in key blocks adjoining the main downtown business corridor.
CLEAN, SAFE, AND GREEN—improving the cleanliness and security of downtown; promoting green initiatives.
Cambridge Main Street, Inc. is actively recruiting volunteers to help with new programs and events to rejuvenate Cambridge. A number of city and county residents, businesses, and property owners have already signed up to aid in implementing this ambitious plan.?
Our success and viability will depend on our ability to stay in close touch with the citizenry, to meet its needs, and to attract a large number of supporters.
