GOVERNOR RETURNS TO DOWNTOWN, ANNOUNCES NEW GRANTS TO BOOST CAMBRIDGE

Governor O'Malley in CambridgeJanuary 7, 2010—Gov. Martin O'Malley popped into our downtown today and brought news of up to $1 million headed this way. During a "Business Roundtable" with business owners from around the region, he made the announcement that funds through three different grant applications submitted by the city would be available in the near future to (1) build new green, energy-efficient houses; (2) help homeowners weatherize and improve older houses; and (3) fix up some streets and gutters.

All of the projects are earmarked for the "Smart Site/Maple Street" area the governor toured earlier this year, and most of the funds will be coming through the Department of Housing and Community Development. In 2008, Cambridge Main Street submitted a successful application to DHCD to win Maple Street designation for parts of downtown Cambridge. The city is now the lead player in the program, with Main Street playing a supportive role.

More details to come as specifics become available. Congrats to Mayor Jackson-Stanley and her team on preparing the successful grant applications! Held downtown at the Dorchester Center for the Arts, the Jan. 7 session also brought two cabinet secretaries to town--Christian Johansson of the Department of Business and Economic Development and Raymond Skinner of the Department of Housing and Community Development.
